After a cold winter, the lawn will start to actively grow, as temperatures increase throughout spring and so now is the time when it will really benefit from some attention.
When the lawn is dry enough, set the mowing height quite high ensuring that you never take more than a quarter of the leaf off. This helps to preserve quality by stopping the lawn from being over stressed.
As we progress further into spring, the grass will grow faster and so you will need to increase the frequency of mowing and gradually reduce the mowing height until you achieve a good appearance.
For a healthy lawn, spring is the time when you need to be feeding it with the correct nutrients as it will grow rapidly. This will help it to achieve excellent sward density. A combined weed, feed and moss killer will help to tackle any weeds and moss. Apply this when the soil is moist, or when rain is expected.
Weeds should be cut out, removing the roots, before over seeding the affected area. If new seed is not used, then it is likely that more weeds will just come back in time and re-establish.
Spring is a good time to remedy a moss problem that can be common in any damp or poorly drained lawn. Improving the health of a lawn should help to keep it under control. Apply a moss killer, allow it to turn brown and then scarify it to remove any dead matter.
Any lawn that has been subjected to a lot of wear and tear will benefit from some over seeding. This can be combined with top dressing, to help improve its sward density and appearance. Extremely worn out areas can always be patched up using fresh rolls of turf.
