This is the time to prepare your lawn for the onset of winter by making it as strong and as healthy as it can possibly be. It will help it to reach the next spring in the best possible condition.
Ensure that leaves or debris that have been scattered over your lawn are removed using a rake or a brush. It is also advisable to cut back the competing things in your garden like foliage, shrubs and trees, all of which will reduce the amount of shade over your lawn and take up valuable nutrients in the soil and water.
As the lawn progresses through autumn, the growth will slow and it will need mowing less frequently. Longer grass will cope better with the adverse weather conditions that the end of Autumn and Winter will typically bring, so it is advisable to increase the cutting height of your mower.
Using a rake, tidy the lawn of any dead grass, roots or moss. To deal with moss, it is worth using moss killer before scarifying, then raking out the dead moss when it turns to a brown colour.
An Autumn feed, before the onset of winter, will provide much needed nutrients for your lawn to fight off disease and will help to keep it a healthy green colour.
Using a fork or an aerating machine, aerate any compacted soil to improve drainage and help the roots develop.
